Jana's Journey to Alakanuk

Who had any inkling I would some day be teaching in an isolated village of approximately 700 people in Alaska? I had no clue until I accepted the job a few weeks ago. I have no experience with subarctic climates, short hours of sunlight, or living in a place where I am considered part of the 1.99% white population. But, I'll find out when I see Alaska for the first time on August 8, 2010!

The village of Alakanuk is spread out three miles along the Yukon River, just 15 miles from the Bering Sea. (It's is closer to Russia than Anchorage.) I'm eager to see the place I'll call my home for one school year. Without a doubt, I'm excited to develop new perspectives which will evolve my personal life and teaching career to another level.

Stay tuned for pictures and messages to come from my journey to Alakanuk, Alaska.

Part of my support family throughout my life, school, and now my Alaskan experience. Thank you.

All of these amazing women have been mothers to me. And Rachel, you are the best sister a girl could ask for.
